Agency Publishing

As a new author navigates the publishing industry,  one of the main way to get your books published is through agency publishing.  You may be wondering what are the benefits of agency publishing. This is where a literary agent will hold your hand and work you through the myriad of obstacles in your way to get commercially published and will represent you and your books to commercial publishers.

There are many different benefits to working with an agent. First and foremost, if an author chooses to pursue agency publishing, you will have the opportunity to submit your book to much larger, commercial publishers. Many traditional commercial publishing houses, such as the ‘big five’ will not accept submissions unless they are represented by a literary agent. Agency publishing will also ensure that the author gets the best deal, as the agent will negotiate royalties, advances, and other contract terms to benefit the author.

Agency publishing can also be a collaborative process. There are some agents who provide editing services or assist the author in revising their manuscript and bringing it up to publishable standards. Once an agent has signed on an author and sold their book, they continue to support their career as a writer. This may include work shopping new book ideas, selling series or sequels, and helping the author choose a good marketing company. As opposed to self-publishing, an agent provides the author with a support system to navigate the world of publishing.

As the publishing industry continues to grow and change, many companies and agents must grow and change along with it.

An agency publishing company can work with authors on two different levels. The first is to work with the writer as a literary agent, and to represent and sell their books to commercial publishers. This can be a long process that takes time. The author must first find the right agent and go through the review process. Then once they have been signed, their book is ready to send to commercial publishers. It can take up to six months to find the right publisher, and longer to negotiate a contract.  Then the commercial publishers can take up to 9 months to publish their book and get it to market.

If an author wants to have their book on the market sooner, they may work with an agency publishing company that will independently publish their book. Langtons International Agency has started their own independent publishing imprint, Central Park South Publishing and works with a fantastic production team to design and produce their books. As it is a smaller company, this process is quicker and a book can be published and on the market within 2 months, as opposed to 1-2 years with a traditional publishing company.

Langtons International is a successful company that has both a literary agency, and an independent publishing company, Central Park South Publishing.
